About This Scholarship
This scholarship is given in honor of Mr. David C. Y. Ho (1936-2017). Trained as a social worker, David’s early career led him to counsel high school students at the local NYC public schools. He then created and led one of the first social service agencies in Chinatown (the Chinese Development Council), which aimed to provide services to the recently immigrated Chinese community in Lower Manhattan. He was also an energetic community organizer and eloquent advocate for those unable to do so themselves. During its time, the Council organized countless naturalization and professional English workshops, extended work placement services, and even created a federal credit union specifically devoted to serving the local community, providing the fuel for their Chinese American dreams.
David valued civic duty and moral uprightness, and believed in nurturing those with leanings towards unconventional paths. In this spirit and to honor these values, this scholarship was established by his daughter Emily H. Ho ’08.
The scholarship is awarded in the amount of $2,000 to a single student who elects to work an unpaid/low-paying internship in the summer following their senior year, to give them a chance to pursue their dreams.
