PLEASE NOTE:
This event has ended.
We are grateful for the support received from the entire alumni community for our inaugural gala. We raised $133,125 to support our mission: To support Stuyvesant High School and its students, and to help promote fellowship among alumni.
To all our supporters, thank you! To all alumni, we hope to see you next year!
2019 Benefit for Stuyvesant
We are pleased to bring together the alumni community for our inaugural Benefit for Stuyvesant, which will take place on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at The Water Club. You will not want to miss out on this event!
2019 Benefit for Stuyvesant
First Golden Pegleg for Outstanding Achievement Awardee
We will award the first “Golden Pegleg” to Nobel Laureate Richard Axel, MD ’63. Dr. Axel is a university professor and investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Columbia University Medical Center. He also serves as a Co-Director of Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute.
In 2004, Dr. Axel won a Nobel Prize for his groundbreaking work in decoding olfaction, our sense of smell. Specifically, Dr. Axel identified more than 1,000 special receptors in the nose that transmit olfactory information to the brain.
GOLDEN PEGLEG "YOUNG ALUM" AWARDEE
Samantha Whitmore ’09 is a scientist and software engineer. As Head of Engineering at Kensho, she built the company’s trade backtesting system and subsequently led the data infrastructure division through a $550 million acquisition by S&P Global.
For her work at Kensho, Ms. Whitmore was named to the 2019 Forbes 30 Under 30. She received a master’s degree in Experimental and Theoretical Physics from Cambridge University and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a joint degree in Physics and Mathematics. In September, Ms. Whitmore will return to Harvard to begin a PhD program in Earth and Planetary Sciences. She credits her Stuyvesant education with introducing her to computer science and physics.
GOLDEN PEGLEG "YOUNG ALUM" AWARDEE
Nzingha Prescod ’10 is a Brooklyn native and two-time Olympic foil fencer and multiple World Champion. She started fencing at 9 years old at the Peter Westbrook Foundation, where she currently volunteers as an instructor on weekends. By the age of 15, Ms. Prescod was ranked in the top five of the Senior division, and has gone on to become a four-time World Champion. She is the first African-American woman to win an individual medal at the Senior World Championships (2015) and qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London at the age of 19.
In 2016, Ms. Prescod returned to the Olympics in Rio de Janiero and finished 11th. She graduated from Columbia University with a degree in political science and a concentration in Race & Ethnicity. She currently works as a consultant at Ernst & Young while training for the next Olympics in Tokyo.
Teacher Honoree
We will be honoring longtime Stuyvesant teacher and Speech & Debate Coach, Ms. Julie Sheinman.
Julie Sheinman was hired at Stuyvesant in 1984 by Principal Abe Baumel to start a debate team for the school. Through her own hard work and the talent and dedication of the Stuyvesant students, Ms. Sheinman was able to found one of the largest and most successful teams in the US. Over the years, Stuyvesant Speech & Debate has garnered dozens of city, state and national championships. Alumni of the team have gone on to success in theater, business, medicine, law, academia, and many other professions.
In 2017, Ms. Sheinman was elected to the NSDA Coaching Hall of Fame, the highest honor for any high school Speech & Debate coach. In 2018, she was voted NYS Speech and Debate Educator of the year.
Her greatest joy is her daughter, Fannie, who is a proud Stuy alumna, a former novice director of the Speech Team, and a rising senior at Tufts University.
