First GOLDEN PEGLEG FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARDEE

We awarded the first “Golden Pegleg” to Nobel Laureate Richard Axel, MD ’63. Dr. Axel is a university professor and investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Columbia University Medical Center. He also serves as a Co-Director of Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute.

In 2004, Dr. Axel won a Nobel Prize for his groundbreaking work in decoding olfaction, our sense of smell. Specifically, Dr. Axel identified more than 1,000 special receptors in the nose that transmit olfactory information to the brain.
